New Owies!

Being Dr. mom comes with advantages and disadvantages- advantages: I have the cell phone number of close to 30 different doctors- definitely a perk for second opinions!! disadvantages: if your ABC's are fine (airway, breathing, circulation) after an injury, other things may be minimized. Case in point, BJ decided all he wanted for Christmas this year was lots of adventure in Omaha leading to the minor scrapes, bruises, and bleeding heads that come with it! It seems thus far BJ has been able to fall or wipe out or bump his head without any demonstrative injury. Not so for the week of Christmas. We were able to spend a week in Omaha (making it through on the interstate right before they closed it during a relative snow storm in NE). It was awesome- BJ played with Grammy, Papa, Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt Miranda, Uncle Jason, and his cousin Anson. Lots of giggles from our little boy all week! He did have a few tumbles (hard when you've just started walking 3 months ago). One such tumble he lost his footing near the fireplace at Grammy's house. He fell over, hit his head on the brick, and came up crying immediately. I ran over and got him (jumping over Brandon to get there) and started to try and calm him. Saying "It's okay, you're fine." Brandon came over to assess the damage and only slightly alarmed let's me know that, it's not okay, he's dripping blood. We quickly reassessed the damage to find a moderate scrap with a few deeper gashes (those are the medical terms- J/K). With a little pressure, time, and a bit of vaseline on the cut, we stopped the bleeding, no stitches or staples required. It has healed fine- and I'm learning quickly to assess my primary survey (ABC's) and then move on to the secondary- any other injuries before saying "you're fine!' On a side note, I may be bringing home some EMLA (numbing lotion) and staples for future injuries!! After all, as my father in law reminds me, he is a boy!
